Jake Poore鈥檚 journey from a curious student at 蜜桃社 to a leader in regional education and the advertising industry illustrates the transformative power of a strong academic foundation. Enrolling at RCC in 1997 after graduating from Corona High, Poore took his first steps into higher education with an open mind and a willingness to explore.

Though he initially lacked experience in music, Poore auditioned for and joined RCC鈥檚 Chamber Singers. "It was a leap outside my comfort zone," Poore recalls. His involvement not only sparked a love for music but also led to life-changing experiences, including an international competition in Wales and cultural immersion in London and Edinburgh. 鈥淚t was my first time traveling internationally, and it broadened my perspective in ways I hadn鈥檛 imagined,鈥 Poore shares. These experiences helped him develop confidence, adaptability, and a greater sense of possibility for his future.

Poore鈥檚 time at RCC wasn鈥檛 without challenges. Math had long been a barrier, but with the patience and belief of his professor, Mr. DeGuzman, he overcame this hurdle and continued to build his confidence. 鈥淚鈥檓 not sure Mr. DeGuzman knows how much of an impact he had; if not for him, I might have given up on college entirely,鈥 Poore admits. He credits the talented faculty at RCC for recognizing the potential in their students and creating an environment that fosters growth and resilience. 鈥淭he faculty at RCC not only prepared me academically but also helped me realize I could overcome obstacles and succeed.鈥

During his time at RCC, Poore also discovered the importance of utilizing resources and making the most of every opportunity. 鈥淐ollege is about experiencing everything you can and using all the resources available to you,鈥 he emphasizes. At RCC, he found a supportive community that encouraged his growth. 鈥淎t the time, I never thought I would be where I am today. I barely made it out of RCC, but my message is clear: you can do anything you put your mind to.鈥

After transferring to California State University, San Bernardino, Poore discovered his passion for communication and media. He dove into hands-on experiences at Coyote Radio, where he blended creativity and leadership. Later, he launched Coyote Advertising, a student-run agency that provided practical training in marketing, design, and media production. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at CSUSB, mentoring students and preparing them for public relations and advertising careers.

Poore鈥檚 leadership extended beyond the classroom and campus. As president of the Inland Empire Chapter of the American Advertising Federation and later as governor of AAF District 15, he played a key role in shaping the advertising industry across Southern California and Western Nevada. 鈥淏eing part of AAF allowed me to contribute to the industry on both a local and national scale,鈥 Poore explains. 鈥淚 was able to engage with programs like the American Advertising Awards and National Student Advertising Competition, which provided incredible opportunities for students.鈥 His work in AAF reflects his commitment to creating pathways for young professionals and fostering connections that advance their careers.

Professionally, Poore has held communication roles in California鈥檚 largest postsecondary systems, including the University of California and California State University. These roles enabled him to build expertise in higher education marketing and communications while advocating for equitable access to education. Today, as director of communications at Growing Inland Achievement, Poore champions educational equity and economic success in the Inland Empire. He amplifies the region鈥檚 challenges and successes through innovative storytelling, which includes several award-winning podcasts and radio programs. 鈥淢y RCC experience is woven into everything I do today. It gave me the confidence to explore my passions and the resilience to face challenges,鈥 Poore reflects.

For today鈥檚 students, Poore emphasizes the importance of persistence, mentorship, and embracing opportunities: 鈥淭he path from college to career isn鈥檛 always a straight line. Take your time, seek guidance, and never stop learning. Even if it takes longer than expected, perseverance will open doors to your purpose.鈥

From stepping out of his comfort zone as a first-year RCC student to making a significant impact in education and the advertising industry, Poore鈥檚 story highlights the profound and enduring value of an RCC education. His journey exemplifies how a supportive environment, dedicated faculty, and transformative experiences can shape a life of purpose and leadership.
